CFR Clunj 0-2 Barely Athletic
It was defeat for the Clunj in our penultimate game of the season last night, with a 2-0 victory for Barely Athletic sealing second place for them in the table, and putting an end to any hopes we had of promotion.
Remembering our opponents from our previous encounter as a young and energetic team, this would be again proven during the early stages as they made the brighter start to the match, showing good movement in attack and forcing Jack into a number of fine reflex stops to keep them out. Once we finally started to grow into the game, we nearly got in via a couple of well-weighted long balls over the top, before their keeper then managed to get the faintest of touches to an attempt from Adam to push the ball onto the post - this sadly proving what would be our only proper attempt on target all night.
Barely Athletic would then also go on to strike the woodwork soon after, as a well-hit effort clipped the far upright. But around a third of the way into the tie, the deadlock was then finally broken, when they took full advantage of us allowing them a 2-on-1 at a corner, to smash the ball in at the near post.
Knowing that the game was far from over, we then began the second half on top with some decent spells of possession in their half. Sadly though, the crucial final part was still just lacking, with their keeper remaining untested. This lack of killer edge would go on to prove costly for us, as with just over five minutes to go they went on to grab the vital second goal, when a failure to track back from us allowed their man the time and space to fire home a decent finish into the bottom corner.
A couple of good reflex stops from Jack then prevented him extending their lead further, whilst despite our best efforts, some wayward and wild finishing meant a night to forget in front of goal as we just could not find a way back into the game in the end.

CFR Clunj 3-5 Sub Standard Liege
It was defeat for the Clunj last night, as an entertaining 8-goal encounter saw us eventually go down 5-3 to runaway league leaders Sub Standard Liege. With both Jack and Mike available this week, team news would see the latter make another outfield appearance for us, whilst Tom Cruwys would also come in for a debut to help take us up to six.
He would be the man to have the first chance of the evening, when smashing one against the outside of the post inside the first minute. But it was our opponents who then went on to open the scoring, when a well-struck effort took a slight deflection as it flew into the back of the net from close range. We got ourselves back on level terms not too long after; Adam just getting to a loose ball in time on the edge of their box to slam home right-footed for his first of the season.
Sub Standard would then dominate the next period of the game as they looked to regain their lead, but an incredible goalkeeping performance from Jack would see him make save after save to somehow keep them out. Sadly though he would eventually be beaten, when Matty for them slotted home via the far post after his initial attempted pass had been blocked but the ball had fallen kindly back to him. Our keeper then went on to slide out and make a couple of further key blocks, whilst Tom at the other end whistled a solo effort narrowly wide of the post as it remained 2-1 at the break.
A few minutes after the turnaround we did then go on to level things up, as Ollie's run saw him steal half a yard on his marker to steer the ball home from right on the edge of their box. However our opponents were back in front only moments later, as they squared across the area for a free man to tuck in for 3-2. But refusing to give up, the team in red would then go on to yet again grab another equaliser, with Ollie once more finding the net from close range as he reacted quickest to their keeper spilling Mike's effort from distance. The same player then could have even gone on to grab a hattrick, but just couldn't quite sort his feet out at the key moment.
Instead, Sub Standard went on to show why they will win the league, as they responded with two further goals to seal the three points - firstly working their way out of a tight spot on the edge of our box to allow for a spare man to slot home a low finish, before Matty ran clean through late on to comfortably find the bottom corner.

CFR Clunj 2-1 Jimmys Crickets
It was a return to winning ways for the Clunj last night as we picked up a narrow 2-1 victory over bottom of the table Jimmy's Crickets, a result which sees us now climb up to third in the table and level on points with second-placed Barely Athletic.
On a night played in boiling temperatures of almost 30°, we should have gone into the game with a clear advantage considering our opponents had just played a match immediately before. But as it happened, there wasn't actually that much between the two sides early on, with both having their fair share of possession and attempts on goal, albeit none of these really clear-cut chances. Mike did then have to make one good stop to tip an effort over the bar, but it would be the Clunj who would go on to get the opener, as Dan received the ball out wide on the right, and his effort somehow managed to find a way in under their keeper. Frustratingly, our lead would only last a few minutes however, as we completely switched off at the back to allow an untracked man to slot home from the edge of the box.
The early stages of the second period then saw us get on top, creating the greater number of chances, but being denied on multiple occasions by some fine reaction stops from their overworked keeper. Thankfully though we would eventually go on to grab the crucial next goal, as Dan grabbed his second of the night and fifth of the season when picking out the far bottom corner, after George G had done well to win possession and drive us up the pitch in the build-up.
The chances would continue to come for us, but some further good saves combined with some wild finishing meant we just couldn't find a third goal to give us a bit of breathing space. We were however a little unfortunate at one point when having a goal disallowed, as Dan was denied his hattrick as the referee adjudged Ollie's corner had been taken from the wrong line. The single-goal lead did therefore leave for a slightly nervier-than-needed final few minutes, but thankfully despite a couple of half-promising counter attacks from them, they couldn't apply the finish required and so we would hold out for maximum points.

CFR Clunj 2-2 The Jammy Foxes
It proved a game of two halves for the Clunj last night, as despite holding a comfortable half time lead, we allowed our opponents to come back into it after the break and claim a point with a 2-2 draw.
The team in red would start the tie well on the front foot, and almost took a lead inside the opening minute, when Dan cut inside but saw his thumping effort rattle away off the crossbar. It didn't take much longer for us to go on and break the deadlock though, as the same man this time threaded a perfect ball through for Ollie to run onto, and he made no mistake with his finish into the far bottom corner. Our scorer could then have had another soon after when running clean through but missing the target, with the chances continuing to rack up for the Clunj, but a lack of composure meaning their keeper wasn't tested as much as he really should have been.
Meanwhile at the other end, our opponents had barely looked like threatening by this point, with Jack only really required to make one significant save so far when he charged out and spread himself well to block. Shortly before the break we then went on to deservedly double our advantage, as Dan's interception fell nicely into the path of George C, and he kept his cool to calmly slot the ball home from close range to make it 2-0.
Sadly however, the second half was one in which we just never seemed to get going - with our earlier good movement and energy seeming to have deserted us as we began to look quite tired all over the pitch. In fairness our opponents did also appear to have stepped up their game too, looking a lot more threatening in attack as they went on to force Jack into a number of incredible reflex stops. Around midway through the half The Jammy Foxes did unfortunately finally find a way past him though, when their man showed good skill down the left before tucking away a tidy finish from the edge of the box.
A couple more scares for us then followed, before they then grabbed their equaliser with about five minutes to play - it coming in slightly fortunate fashion, as despite George C managing to get back in to make a challenge, he could only stab the ball past Jack and in off the far post. The same player then almost went on to grab a winner for us at the right end late on, but a good stop down low to his left from their keeper - his only real save of the half - meant it would finish all square.

CFR Clunj 5-1 Jimmys Crickets
The Clunj last night came from behind to pick up another important three points, as five different goalscorers saw us register a 5-1 victory over bottom of the table Jimmy's Crickets.
It was quite a slow start to the tie from the team in red, with us lacking any real energy on another warm night, and this seeing our opponents take full advantage when slotting home a low finish from the edge of the box to register an early lead. It would take until Dan came on as a sub for us around five minutes in for us to level things up, as from a corner he lost his marker at the far post to nod in a rare headed goal. Their keeper then went on to make a string of fine full-stretch saves to deny us, before he was finally beaten again with the last action of the half; George C driving through centrally before managing to pick out the bottom corner.
Despite our lead, it hadn't been a great performance from us so far though, and some poor defensive tracking early in the second half could have allowed them back in it, but thankfully Jack didn't end up being called into any meaningful action. As the game wore on we did then finally begin to take control of the tie however - George G showing good concentration to slot home a tidy finish from the edge of the box after Adam and George C had combined well in the build-up to create the chance.
With their defence now appearing to tire, our runs in behind were causing them continuous problems - and this would lead to our fourth of the night as Ollie ran through to drill home low for his third of the season. Their clear man of the match on the night was their keeper, and he went on to make a couple more fine reflex stops to help keep the score down. There was little he could do to stop us adding a fifth and final goal of the tie late on though - Brem lifting the ball over him from close range for a well-deserved first Clunj goal, after George C had picked him out with an impressive fourth assist of the evening.
